Workshop for Special Sector

Basic Web Authoring Workshop

March 30-31, 2001

As we move into the warmer days of Spring, the Year 2001 maintains to be yet another year that sees Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP) Pakistan render its high level of provider service for the Special Learning Needs Community, as well as increasing its profile and links with the wider community. Attempts are being made to provide encouraging and easily accessible technological information primarily for instructors and trainers of the population who have a disability. The disabled sector of the population includes those who have physical limitations, those who have hearing difficulties and those who are visually impaired, etc.

Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP) strongly feels that in this age, non-profits especially Special Sector organizations cannot afford to be left in the dark as it has been so many times in the past. Correspondingly as computer technology advances so too must institutes working in the 'Special Learning Needs Sector' adapt to meet the requirements of this ever-changing area. In accepting the challenge inherent in this statement SDNP dedicates its efforts to enabling the incapacitated to achieve their potentials. It seeks to provide the current Information Technology advancements in order to ensure that all such individuals are given every opportunity to be successful, contributing members of society.

Subsequent to the initiative taken in October 2000, Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP), organized a further training session on March 30th & 31st, 2001 for the 'Special Learning Needs Sector' of Pakistan. The topic of the workshop was 'Basic Web Authoring' and participants (primarily the teaching staff of special institutes) were given orientation and instructions on developing websites. This two-day instruction session was organized in collaboration with the Deaf Education & Welfare Association (DEWA) and hosted at the DEWA College of Information Technology (DCIT) Computer Lab.

The focus of SDNP's work aims that special people achieve equality of opportunity and full participation in society thus enabling them to assert their rights as contributing citizens of the community. With outlook on future, this initiative is good news not only for the special sector but also for business. It aims to develop a network which would eventually serve as an independent and central source on which businesses can rely to obtain information, whether on recruiting disabled people, or on making services accessible to them.

SDNP has to date offered a diverse range of trainings. These instruction sessions are updated where relevant and SDNP always welcomes suggestions and ideas for new and different workshops by community members.

SDNP is a global initiative of United Nations Development Programme and it is being managed in Pakistan by IUCN- The World Conservation Union.
